My Time with Joe Cocker, Mad Dogs & Englishmen
May 28, 2009
March 1969, I was 19 years old and meeting Joe for the first time at the A&M sound stage on La Brea, in Hollywood. I fell in love with his music and his spirit on first site. This was another adventure Sandy Konikoff got me into! The sound stage was like a choreographed love-in, a music lover’s paradise & holy rocker carnival! For the next two weeks people hung out between the A&M lot and Leon’s house —Then, 38 of us (self-chosen & invited) departed by private plane for 2 months of an all-out outrageous rock and roll tour of the US. Andee (Cohen) Nathanson and I were the two documentary photographers. It was my first job! We had total freedom to shoot from anywhere at any time: on stage, under Joe’s feet, from above, inside/outside, and all around. For two months we all lived together, ate together, played together — a traveling circus of merry and sometimes not so merry pranksters invading airports, hotels, stages, restaurants, local parks en masse. It was a blast. I was the youngest member of the tour, and totally protected by the older folks…Many stories to tell!!!
Here is a blast from the past in photos of the Tour – enjoy http://www.lindawolf.net/Joe.
